Regular Activities

Youth Speaks The Club organizes for Slough Schools this national Rotary competition in public speaking. Heats are held locally and then at District level.

Kids Out We escort Children with disabilities to a local adventure theme park and work with them to encourage their participation in the various activities.

Slough Young Citizen of the Year The club sponsors the Slough Borough Council Award for a young person who merit's the title of Slough Young Person of the Year. Subsequent to the presentation of the award by the Mayor the winner is entertained to a dinner at the club.

Old Folks Christmas Shopping Rotarians collect the elderly and escort them around Slough shops on an evening that the shops have extended hours, usually an evening when the town switches on the Christmas lights. Many of the elderly would find it difficult to shop at this time without this help.

Blind and Disabled Club We provide transport for the blind and disabled to attend their monthly social meetings.

Wexham Lunch and Summer River Boat Evening. Jointly with the Slough Soroptomists, Age Concern, the Rotary Club of Windsor St George and our own Inner Wheel we entertain the local Blind and Disabled club members. In January they enjoy a traditional 'party' Sunday lunch and afternoon tea at the Wexham Graduate Centre and in the summer months a riverboat trip on the Thames.

Talking Magazine for the Blind One of our members is Editor for the monthly Magazine for the Blind. Other members produce the audiotape copies and post them to all local blind and partially sighted people on the register. The postage is provided free by the Post Office.

Queensmere Stroke Awareness Campaign Working jointly with the Rotary Clubs of Iver and Langley and Slough Lions we run a two-day stroke awareness 'shop' in the Queensmere Shopping Centre where local physicians provide shoppers with blood pressure monitoring.

'Hope and Aid Direct' Convoys The Club supports the twice yearly convoys which take aid in the form of food, clothing, tools and equipment to refugees and displaced people in the war torn Balkans, including Kosovo. One of our members organises the Slough collection and transport and other members take part in driving the trucks and delivering the goods directly to the people in need.

Annual French Trip An Autumn visit to a region of France by coach is arranged as a social event combined with fund raising for the Rotary Foundation charity.

Charity Golf Day We run a charity fund-raising golf day at a local golf club. A sporting and social occasion where members and all comers compete for the prestigious Saraogi Trophy. The funds are presented to local charities.

Giant Easter Eggs The club seeks the cooperation of the catering section of Thames Valley University to make giant Easter Eggs which are then distributed to various outlets for charity raffles.

International. An important part of our interest in fostering international understanding are the get-togethers with our twin clubs, Bremen-Hansa in Germany, Vierzon in France and Dothan, Alabama, USA. In most years there will be a visit to at least one of these as well as receiving a delegation from another club. We also provide, often ongoing, financial support to various specific overseas aid projects. These include a leprosy colony, a limb centre in Jaipur, India, a student studying at the Agricultural College in Limaru, Kenya. Currently we are helping with a VSO student on a two-year project to train primary school headmasters in the Maldive Islands.

The President's and Annual Christmas Dinners Formal dinners for members, their families and friends. Good company, and an excellent meal in exciting, often unusual locations.

In addition to the 'always in the calendar' activities members try and make themselves available to support local fundraising for national and international disasters. And let's not forget relaxation in the company of partners and friends, a Bar B Q, an informal supper, we can usually find the time and an excuse to get together and help the world go round.
