Rotary Is
Rotary is a global network of business, professional and community leaders, both men and women, who volunteer their time and skills to serve their local communities and the world outside. Rotarians encourage high ethical standards and help build goodwill and peace in whatever they do.
Rotary is the world's first service club. Founded in Chicago, Illinois on February 23, 1905. At the last count there were approximately 1.2 million Rotarians belonging to more than 33,000 clubs located in more than 200 countries. We have just celebrated our first centenary.
Rotary was founded by Paul P. Harris, an attorney who wished to recapture in a professional club the same friendly spirit he had felt in the small towns of his youth. The name "Rotary" derived from the early practice of rotating meetings, each member taking a turn as host.
Rotarians have the opportunity to meet weekly for fellowship and interesting and informative programmes dealing with topics of local and global importance.Membership reflects a wide cross-section of the community.
Rotarians plan and carry out a remarkable variety of humanitarian, educational, and cultural exchange programmes that positively touch other people's lives.
Rotary is Service above Self.
